The Microbiological Laboratory of the Department of Science and Technology of Caraga is now rendering microbial examination of food products as well as that of potable and nonpotable water. Its primary goal is to ensure that the quality of food and water in the region is safe for public utilization and adheres to the standards stipulated by regulatory bodies.

          Principally, these test includes:


Aerobic/ Heterotrophic Plate Count

This test is intended to indicate the level of micro organism in a product. It is also a procedure for estimating the number of live heterotrophic bacteria in food and water.

Total Coliform (MPN) Count

A presumptive test in detecting the presence of E. coli in food and water.

Fecal Coliform Count

A microbiological test conducted to determine the presence of feces contamination in food and water.

Swab Testing

This is conducted to determine the bacterial count present on surfaces that comes in contact with food samples. It is also a verification procedure to evaluate the effectiveness of sanitary measures taken to prevent food contamination.

Antimicrobial Screening of plant samples

The continuing emergence of antibiotic resistant bacterial and fungal pathogens demands the discovery of new antibiotics. This provides a starting point for the conventional method of testing antimicrobial activity of plant extracts, limited to antibacterial activities for E. Coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

The microbiological screening method used is the paper disc diffusion and are applicable to pure, semi- pure and crude extracts of plants.
