A low-cost and effective wastewater facility is now operational in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur following the turn-over of 1M worth of Sewage Treatment Technology Project by DOST Caraga on Tuesday.

The establishment of the Vertical Helophyte Filter System (VHFS), a nature-based secondary wastewater treatment aims to address the emerging water quality problems in the municipality caused by improper sewage disposal among coastal households and nearby public markets.

This new technology has the ability to filter wastewater before it reaches the river through its different layers of sand filters. The technology is not only good in diminishing water contamination but also relatively inexpensive making it very applicable for rural towns.
