Serving the people better – Agusan del Sur now owns new S&T building

“In DOST, it’s always a partnership. We believe in doing counterpart because we give more value to the output,” told DOST Caraga Regional Dir. Dominga D. Mallonga in an interview during the blessing and inauguration of the new building of the Provincial Science and Technology Center-Agusan del Sur (PSTC-ADS), December 18, 2018.

DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations Services Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano graced the event and congratulated DOST Caraga and PSTC-ADS for the establishment of the building. According to Usec. Manzano, the new home of PSTC-ADS will help the organization reach out to more people in the province and bring S&T interventions. She added that for 2019, DOST will be upgrading its programs for the provinces of Caraga in terms of research and development, technology transfer, S&T human resources, MSME productivity, disaster risk reduction management, Science, Technology and Innovation opportunities, and governance.

The establishment of the building costs Php 4,849,993.35 allocated from DOST Caraga General Appropriations Act (GAA) budget. While the provincial government of Agusan del Sur, headed by Gov. Adolph Edward G. Plaza, donated a total of 0.9-hectare area to PSTC-ADS. A total of 0.632 hectare was allocated for the building area. The rest of the lot, according to Engr. Cabonita will be converted to S&T center soon. PSTC-ADS has long established partnership with the provincial government of Agusan del Sur.

Provincial Science and Technology Director for Agusan del Sur Engr. Andrea J. Cabonita expressed their gratitude to the support given by other government agencies, local government units, and private partners in the establishment and inauguration of the building. “We can now have faster coordination with clients and partners. The building has a training room in the second floor where we can conduct activities,” said Engr. Cabonita during her speech.

There are 81 PSTCs nationwide with only half using their own buildings, according to Usec. Manzano. DOST Caraga is working for the approval of the proposals for new PSTC buildings for Agusan del Norte and Dinagat Islands. Dir. Mallonga also thanked the support of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for the design of the building.

Agusan del Sur Gov. Plaza also attended the event and expressed his support for the programs of DOST in the province. Other partners also graced and supported the activity like DOST Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) clients, representatives from local government units, Development Bank of the Philippines-San Francisco Branch Manager Engr. Freddie Mero, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Provincial Director Braulio P. Dela Peña, Philippine Normal University Campus Executive Director and Provost Dr. Adelyne Costelo- Abre, Philippine Science High School-Caraga Campus Director Ruwina S. Gonzaga, and other Provincial Science and Technology Directors.

The PSTC-ADS office is now located at Government Center, Prosperidad, Patin-ay, Agusan del Sur.

After the ceremonies, Dir. Mallonga, Engr. Cabonita, Pisay Campus Dir. Gonzaga, and DOST Usec. Manzano visited VPO Rosario Agri-Industrial Development Corporation in Rosario, Agusan del Sur. They tried their products and toured the Sago flour processing plant. VPO is a DOST SETUP-assisted firm.
