Known for producing high quality, nutritious and healthy food products, Andoy Bakery and General Merchandise in Gamut, Tago, Surigao del Sur has stood the test of time in terms of business stability.
Their first production area was caught by fire. Their second area was demolished because of a government project. The third, and hopefully the last, was due to a zoning problem that forced them to transfer. But because of the perseverance and hard work of Mrs. Raquel G. Andoy, owner and manager, the business was able to survive.
For almost three decades of providing bakery products, the firm is now known as the leading producer of packed bread and cookies in Surigao del Sur. Their products are widely distributed to sari-sari stores all over the municipalities of Tago, San Miguel, Cagwait, Carrascal, Cantilan, Madrid, Carmen and Lanuza. According to Mrs. Andoy, they are planning to expand their market to the municipalities of Surigao del Norte.
As a beneficiary of DOST’s Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP), the firm was also enrolled in the Manufacturing Productivity Extension (MPEX) Program which provides consultancy services to Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) belonging to the manufacturing sector for overall productivity enhancement.
DOST Caraga, in coordination with the Provincial Science and Technology Center (PSTC)-Surigao del Sur, sets out accredited consulting teams to help clients implement productivity improvement measures on both long term and short term basis.
Hence, uniforms for employees and proper rules and regulations were applied in the production area. Continued employee development is also encouraged even after their initial training in the firm. The firm can do this by attending trainings, workshops, seminars, and mentorship programs provided by the different government agencies like DOST. Through these, the workers can develop additional skills that improve their efficiency and productivity.
The firm also established their bakery signage to increase customer awareness. The consultancy has provided proper plant lay-out and process which the firm was able to implement. Operation now is a lot smoother compared to the previous system. Monitoring wastes during operation and improving the performance of minor ingredient leads to significant savings. After two consultancy visits to the firm and MPEX management trainings, Andoy Bakeshop came up with its own mission, vision, and goals which would benefit the business in the long term.
Together with DOST’s SETUP and MPEX Program, the firm’s gross sales increased from about Php 300,000 to Php 800,000.With a deeper understanding of the processes, the firm is up to invest in innovative resources and products to generate solutions that satisfy their needs and allow for significant savings.
