A total of 22 engineers, environmental management and agriculture experts from different institutions in Caraga were trained on Cleaner Production Technology (CPT), September 11-13.
The participants went through lectures, workshops and company visits for three days to help them learn the steps in conducting and applying integrated environmental strategies, such as reducing wastes, assessing and changing input materials, improving plant layout and production flow, and modifying equipment.
Participants were split into two groups for the site visit of the firms (who are DOST’s clients for the SETUP Program)—Efren Panganiban Farm Traders and Flora’s Cakes and Pastries—located in Buenavista, Agusan del Norte. They consolidated the data gathered from the firms and came up with CPT reports.
Engr. Andre Paolo Lim, an accredited ASEAN industrial engineer, and one of the facilitators of the training recalled the participants were very participative in the process. He encouraged them to be more research-oriented and to continue learning the process and new strategies in CPT.
In his note, DOST Caraga Assistant Regional Director Ricardo Varela further highlighted the importance of CPT Team in the region. “DOST is ready to help them (the participants) in capacity building of skills and knowledge while they commit themselves to be available for the consultancy program,” says Mr. Varela.
The participants were composed of five (5) personnel from the Provincial Science and Technology Centers, 15 faculty and staff from Caraga State University, one faculty from Father Saturnino Urios University and one staff from Caraga State University-Cabadbaran Campus.
The same participants were also trained on Energy Audit last May 2017. They will create the Energy Audit and Cleaner Production Technology Team in the region and will provide technical service to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the region to help increase their productivity with less energy input, materials, and waste in the process.
