“I learned machining through own experience” – this is the common response of machine shop workers in Surigao del Sur when asked how they acquired their knowledge in operating their machine shops. Shop operation without proper training limits productivity and materials utilization efficiency.
In response, the DOST-Surigao del Sur, headed by the Provincial S&T Director Ms. Caressa Leanne V. Lim, in partnership with Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC-DOST) conducted a 3-day Training on Machine Shop Operations at Guerta Enterprises and Machine Shop in Cantilan, Surigao del Sur..
Engr. Edilbert M. Dela Peña and Mr. Tirso P. Entereso from the Metals Industry Research and Development Center (MIRDC) of DOST Central Office served as the training’s resource persons. Lectures on the basics of turning, milling, and grinding were discussed. It included the introduction of machine parts, safety measures on the use of the equipment and its various uses. The training also covered hands-on activity based on the knowledge gained in the lecture. The participants was given ample time to operate the lathe machine. As an output, at the end of the training, they were able to create a metal work based on the design provided by the resource persons.
